A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in national works. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
