Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Rising Tensions and Prior Events
This event takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Key events preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
