British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
