Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 victories have been earned on hard surfaces

A comeback Medvedev claimed his maiden title for nearly 30 months with success over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.

The Russian, a ex- number one, has had a torrid year, winning just one match at the major tournaments and undergoing a meltdown at the US Open.

Medvedev's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serve in particular - caused him falling of the elite rankings and finally splitting with long-time coach his previous coach.

Now collaborating with his coach and Goetzke, Medvedev has steadily improved in the last few weeks - culminating in a hard-fought competitive victory over challenger Moutet.

This represents his first trophy since the Rome competition and first on a hard court after that period of the previous year.

The win also means the Russian has achieved 21 titles at twenty-one distinct events.

"It's the first time I am participating in a tournament with my children at once, so to secure a trophy is particularly special," commented ranked player the champion.

"This championship is in dedication of my younger daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I achieved when my child Alisa was delivered was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had been defeated in his last six finals, featuring in Halle in the past months.

Medvedev's counter-punching play style and recurring emotional displays on the tennis court had prompted some to doubt if his skill to compete at the highest level was concluded.

Yet the player has altered his approach in the last few weeks, striving to approach the net and play positively, reinforced by an better service.

The champion fought back from a deficit in the initial set against the tricky opponent, taking four of the last five points to take the lead.

The competitors swapped breaks in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his initial ATP Tour title, gained dominance to create a third set.

Moutet rescued four early break points in a tight deciding set before the Russian broke to fifteen to serve for the match.

Suitably, he secured the win with a point at the front of the court, with the Frenchman failing to handle a shot after a lengthy match.
